The conservative rivals of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are leading in the parliamentary elections in Iran, while the president’s sister failed to win a seat in the Garmsar district, dpa reported referring to local media.

Informed sources said that a sum of 32 to 33 million Iranians have voted in the country’s 9th parliamentary elections on Friday, putting the public participation rate at around 66 percent, although early official estimates will be released Sunday night, Fars news reported.
Governor of Tabriz city in Northwestern Iran stressed people’s high and fervent turnout in the ninth parliamentary elections, and said polling stations in his city ran out of ballot papers just a few hours after polling started, Fars reported.
Ten saboteurs were arrested in Iran in connection with the parliamentary elections, the head of the election security department, Mohammad-Naqi Baqeri said, Mehr reported.
Iran is going for the international record for the number of people participating at the parliamentary elections, chairman of the Iranian State Commission on elections Sulet Murtazavi said.

Iran’s police has released a statement regarding the upcoming parliamentary elections in Iran, Fars news reported. The elections will be held on March 2. The Guardian Council of Iran earlier approved more than 2,700 of 4,877 registered candidates.
